Before A Realm Reborn:

Ritsuka's father is U'Taweh Tia, a crew member aboard a supply ship that calls Limsa Lominsa's ports home. His father's parents were crewmen as well, and Limsa Lominsa is all his father's family has known for generations. His mother is Ooni Epocan. Originally from the Black Shroud, Ooni's parents took their daughter to Limsa Lominsa on a journey to trade where they were lost to an illness which Ooni luckily escaped. She later took up employment with the fisher's guild where she met U'Taweh during a trade run. They courted briefly and took a liking to each other, but being so used to the sea, U'Taweh couldn't be kept away, and so Ritsuka was raised by his mother in the city and visited with his father when U'Taweh returned for rest.

Being of the two Miqo'te clans, his mother a Keeper of the Moon and his father a Seeker of the Sun, Ritsuka is named after traditions from both. At his father's insistence, he has a longer first name, but he carries his mother's name with him as well. He grew up in his mother's trade and helped her how he was able when he was younger, though he would explore and venture around the city when he could. He learned a limited extent of reading and writing from his mother's teachings and her employment, which he would assist her with when he was older, and he learned stories of warriors in far away lands and monsters in the deep seas from the sailors who came and went in town. When he was 17, his father left on supply mission for soldiers readying for the Battle of Carteneau, a mission that ultimately succeeded, but neither the ship nor its crew returned. Though they rarely saw the man, both Ritsuka and his mother mourned U'Taweh at a memorial for the crew and for the men and women lost in battle.

It was around this time that he began to suffer visions. They would be brief glimpses of the past, usually with something that seemed insignificant at the time, but later held meaning to the person they centered on. He could no sooner hide them than he could hide his own ears, as he felt himself pulled away from reality and the world around him each time, unable to see or hear anything around him. Fortunately, they were rare occurrences, and he learned to cope with and live with them.

Five years later, Ritsuka's dreams began. All he could recall was a voice, unintelligible. The dreams came slowly, but then more frequently as time passed, and it made him restless. So, although content with the life he lived with his mother, the dreams only deepened his want to go. He took it upon himself to plan with his mother and gather his things and journey to see the world and find his place in it. The start of his travels took him to his mother's homeland in the Shroud, to Gridania, where activity in the aether lifted the fog of his dreams and the voice became clear.

"Hear... Feel... Think..."

It seemed to guide him, to reassure, even as before him a dark figure appeared, all but ready to strike him down. But armor appeared over his own body, and a lance appeared in his hand. He had never carried this armor, this weapon, but it felt as natural as the air in his lungs, and he set himself ready fight.
